No-Quarter Flag Quilt

Love for home, family, or tradition is complicated by the moral reckoning with what those things have represented. In my quilt work, this manifests as a negotiation of space, pattern, and distortion. The grid offers structure, but what is underlying bleeds through telling a messier story. I’m looking to continue my exploration of culture but widen the lens to explore how pride is represented through cultural symbols like flags in America. The No-Quarter Flag is part of the Confederate flag family that stands for no lives will be spared despite surrendering. Using a printing press, I printed "the hate you learned," replacing the space of the stars.
